Hydraulic Cylinders Maintenance and Inspection is very important, Given the demanding role hydraulic cylinders perform in a variety of applications, a strict maintenance schedule and regular inspection plan must be followed and done.

Why Maintenance and inspection needed?

Consistent  hydraulic cylinder maintenance should be done to ensure longevity and also avoid further damage to hydraulic systems and regular hydraulic cylinder repair work to be done.

Anytime a piece of equipment or machinery is taken down for general maintenance or repair, it should be evaluated for job effectiveness.

Important factor to consider is to prevent unplanned downtime .

Guide to Hydraulic cylinders Maintenance & Inspection

Ensuring Your hydraulic oil is clean

Ensure adequate filtration system for hydraulic fluid. Check for dirt or foreign materials in the fluid with regularly scheduled samples sent out for analysis. Inspect the filter for any clogs.

Check up piston and cap for any kind of particles within the cylinder.

water contamination within the fluid may lead to hydraulic failure and should be immediately cleaned, keep your hydraulic cylinder away from moisture which may lead to corrosion or uneven wear.

Inspecting piston seals and rod seals prevent that leaks won’t allow cylinder drift to detract from cylinder efficiency .

Regular Maintenance

For optimal performance, regular maintenance of the hydraulic cylinder is important, Inspect your hydraulic cylinder rod for signs of weakness or stress.

check the condition of the cylinder rod a rough, bent, or scored rod will damage seals or allow for leaks. Inspect sealed areas of the system components and fluid lines for evidence of leaks. Examine all lubricated areas and replenish them as needed.

Review Cylinder Tube for signs of ballooning and/or machine interference which can cause serious leaks, damage, and even cylinder failure.

Apart from inspecting the condition of rods it is very important to keep eye on rod eyes, clevises, brackets and ball joints. Make sure that a worn clevis or pivot pin is not the cause of any significant play in the cylinder joints.

Stocking Up most common repair parts

It’s very important to have most cylinder repair spare parts to avoid downtime

Check for side loading, which if not corrected, can lead to misalignment, tube scoring, and bearing wear and damage beyond repair.

using alternate cylinder can help keep hydraulic cylinders in good shape and reduce downtime.

How to Test your hydraulic cylinder ?

For optimal performance, it’s very important to inspect your hydraulic cylinder to check for any leakage and to check this you need to be pressuring the cylinder at the end of the stroke. This hydraulic cylinder testing technique is called as end of stroke bypass test

one of the major drawbacks of this testing is that the testing will be done at either ends of the seals rather than then entire hydraulic cylinder, where there is less possibility of deterioration of components, and it is usually seen in the center of the hydraulic cylinder tube where it is most often prone to more damage.

These tests are suitable for a double acting cylinders to test the piston seals, this test requires an engineer to hold the cylinder mechanically in the center even an small hydraulic cylinder can produce 6-10 tonnes of force, so this is impossible and dangerous for hydraulic cylinder of larger size.

The most suitable hydraulic cylinder testing that is appropriate for this is hydrostatic testing . In this method the piston is held in any particular position hydraulically before the test is performed the pressure intensification helps piston keep it’s position in a particular position and to make sure all the seals are functional with no leakages.

The only drawback in this method is that if the pressure created at the ends of pistons will be so great that it causes disastrous failure, To avoid this a pressure valve at the ends should be added which even helps in safety of hydraulic engineer too.

For The following test to be carried out you need to implement certain precautions

  1. Make sure hydraulic cylinder is secured.
  2. Clean fluid inside the cylinder, should be either side and through the service ports.
  3. Remove any air from the cylinder using directional valve.
  4. Place the piston rod mid-stroke and close the ball valve.
  5. Make sure fluid is at the side of cylinder where the rod is present.
  6. Modifying the settings of the relief valve until you see pressure on the gauges.
  7. Close both the ball valve and the directional control valve.
  8. Keep an eye on the pressure of gauges on each side and their changes.
  9. The brackets, clevises, rod eyes, ball joints or other linked parts to a hydraulic cylinder is very important as the cylinder itself
